Proposed Construction
Chabad La Jolla has applied for a building permit for an institutional complex on the corner of Hidden Valley Road and Ardath Road (2466 Hidden Valley Road) - a stone's throw from La Jolla Parkway and one of the busiest intersections in San Diego County.

The proposed project would include space for a 96-seat sanctuary, a pre-school*, a playground, a library, a social hall, a meeting room, offices, a commercial kitchen, an underground parking structure, and a four-bedroom residence. The total square footage of the Chabad Center would be 11,666, not including the 12,000 square foot parking garage. The complex would rise to just inches under 30 feet. (*Pre-schools are not permitted in the La Jolla Shores Planned District.)

The chart below compares the square footage of existing buildings in Hidden Valley with what is proposed for the Chabad complex.

In addition, the ratio of building size to lot size is completely out of proportion with our residential neighborhood.

Chabad La Jolla proposes to tear down the 2,951 sq. ft. house currently on the property and construct a two-story institutional complex with underground parking. If the applicant's permit is approved, this:

Sorry, folks, but the attorney for the Chabad architect threatened legal action if I kept the drawings and plans on the website. However, they are on file at the La Jolla branch of the San Diego Public Library (lower level) or at the City of San Diego's Development Services offices at First Avenue and A Street in downtown San Diego.

You can also view them on the website of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (www.lajollacpa.org). On their homepage, click on "Downloads," then on "Chabad Plans & Traffic Study."

The various spaces in the proposed complex - including the sanctuary, pre-school, playground, library, social hall, meeting room, offices, commercial kitchen, underground parking structure, and four-bedroom residence - are shown on the plans below: Also deleted after threat of legal action.
